Se avessi dovuto scrivere questa recensione dopo aver ascoltato una sola volta i primi tre o quattro brani (cosa che, ahimè, qualcuno fa …) probabilmente, oltre ad avergli appioppato (forse) una risicata sufficienza di stima, cosa ben più grave, mi sarei perso tutto ciò che di bello riesce a svelare questo disco di volta in volta.

Perché, parliamoci chiaro, A Fire on the Sea, secondo album in vent’anni di carriera dei doomsters inglesiUnsilence, è un lavoro che dal punto di vista formale non è esente da pecche, rinvenibili soprattutto in un vocalist come James Kilmurray il quale, più che cantare, intona i testi con voce salmodiante e sovente neppure particolarmente intonata, rivelandosi in tal senso una sorta di Tony Wakeford prestato al doom.
Ma, proprio come nel caso del campione del neofolk, quello che fa la differenza è l’insieme tra musica, voce e atmosfere, ed è proprio grazie a ciò che gli Unsilenceriescono ad insinuarsi con lentezza velenosa nelle difese allentate di chi comincia a venire a patti con la voce del buon James, fino ad arrivare al punto di pensare che se, a cantare questi brani ci fossero Robert Lowe o Messiah Marcolin, paradossalmente le loro eccezionali ugole non si rivelerebbero altrettanto appropriate.
I quarantacinque minuti di A Fire on the Sea vanno goduti quasi come si trattasse realmente di un rito officiato da un prete di campagna appena sbucato dalla sacrestia: solo così la bellezza delle melodie che la coppia Tuohey/Kilmyurray produce a getto continuo può restare impressa a lungo nella memoria, scombinando tutti i rigidi canoni stilistici ed i metri di valutazione con i quali spesso finiamo per autolimitarci.
Due perle spiccano tra i sette brani presentati dagliUnsilence: la title-track ed On Wild Fileds, la prima intrisa di umori folk e la seconda, invece, autentica magnificenza a base di melodie evocative a cavallo tra epicità e malinconia; ma non è affatto da sottovalutare il resto della tracklist, fatta di brani apparentemente semplici e che, invece, riescono ad avvolgere come le spire di un boa, inclusa la breve parentesi acustica di Old Tides.

E’ evidente che l’accettazione o meno della tecnica vocale di James Kilmurray fungerà da netto spartiacque tra il considerare A Fire on the Sea un disco splendido o una “boiata pazzesca”; di norma, i doomsters più veraci tendono ad andare ben oltre i se
mplici aspetti formali lasciando che sia l’emotività a fungere da linea guida nell’ascolto e nella percezione della musica e, quindi, in questo caso specifico, sono sempre più convinto che gliUnsilence abbiano fatto loro un gradito regalo.

Idag är det Engelska Unsilence med sin senaste platta, A Fire On The Sea, som är under granskning.
Till att börja med skall jag säga att jag nog lyssnat på den här skivan vid helt fel tillfälle. Lyssnandet tog sin början under ett träd i Småland, de varmaste kvällarna som denna hetaste sommar på länge bjudit, för att fortsättas på en sandstrand under den Kretanska värmeböljan.
Och även om Unsilence bjuder på sval Doom på skivan, så känner jag instinktivt att Oktober, November hade varit en mer klädsam inramning till deras musik.
Att jag dessutom den senaste tiden mentalt vandrat mot mer och mer organisk "proto" rock gör väl inte saken bättre.

För det vi bjuds här är ganska långt från retro-rock scenen. Det är i stället en mix av ödesmättad och storslaget svulstig doom.
Snygg och polerad produktion, på gränsen till överproducerat. Vilket i sig är både

fördelen och nackdelen med skivan. Det är en bra skiva. Väldigt jämn och behaglig. Dock sticker den heller inte ut åt något håll. Det blir aningen svalt.

Instrumenten har en förmåga att flyta ut i en för mig något anonym ljudmatta, och även om det bjuds på väldigt mycket snygga riff från gitarren, så hade det i mina öron gärna fått varit lite mindre polerat och lite mer attack. Den största behållningen blir därför sången, som är ren och väldigt snygg.

Sångmelodin ger känsla av ödesmättad folkmusik. Det är bra sjunget med passande texter.

Jag känner att denna recension blir aningen splittrad och kanske inte helt rättvis, jag får skylla på ringrostighet. Och även om det låter så, så är det absolut ingen dålig platta, utan i rätt sinnesstämning tror jag detta är riktigt bra. Det finns en hel del bra låtar på skivan även om det inte är någon skiva som kommer att gå till historien som klassiker. Gillar man dessutom sin musik av det mer episka slaget, ja då bör du lyssna in dig på plattan. Från mig blir det till slut ändå 3 starka Ess av 5 möjliga

Los británicos UNSILENCE llevan batallando desde 1993 con su grandioso doom metal, y ha sido este A fire on the sea con el que han tocado techo por el momento. Tres demos y dos eps los contemplaban hasta que en 2009 editan su primer álbum, Under a torn sky, aunque si nos ajustamos a la realidad, su debut debió salir en 1997. Se iba a titularChoirs of memory, pero problemas con su sello le impidió ver la luz aún a día de hoy. Por lo tanto, podemos decir que este es uno de esos curiosos casos de grupo rebosante de calidad pero sin un ápice de suerte.

En el doom hay infinidad de vertientes, y a no ser que me haya perdido alguna por el camino, puedo decir que me encantan todas y cada una de ellas. UNSILENCEpertenecen a la parte más heavy del subgénero, no es una banda lenta ni tortuosa, aplican riffs matadores a composiciones que sorprenden de lo simples y a la vez elaboradas que son, con melodías extrañas, más aún teniendo en cuenta que quien da protagonismo a esa melodía es su cantante/guitarrista James Kilmurray, possedor de una envolvente y extraña voz que aún a día de hoy, y tras varias escuchas al álbum no he podido descifrar a quién me recuerda (se agradecería la ayuda en los comentarios). Sin duda, las voces son la parte más atractiva del disco (obviamente, sin desdeñar para nada el trabajo instrumental), con ese deje a GHOST (paso del B.C.) o a las voces limpias de DIMMU BORGIR (gracias Daniel por intentar descifrarlo, pero no es exacto, jejeje…). Esos ecos vocales, esa majestuosidad, se traduce para mí en cierto acercamiento a los grupos escandinavos de folk metal (a ver quien me dice que no recuerdan a ese estilo en canciones como la que da título al disco) que hacen de A fire on the sea una gran experiencia musical, repleta de sentimientos. Vamos, lo que muchos catalogan de epic doom metal.

Así nos encontramos con excepcionales temas como “A thousand seasons”, que posee una parte central que mezcla un ritmo aplastante de puro heavy metal oscuro con la más bella armonía vocal, o delicadas piezas épicas como la inicial “The doorway”, donde incluso me vino a la mente aquel magnífico grupo folk CARVED IN STONE. En la música de UNSILENCE hay un balance entre lo potente, lo heavy, que lo marcan los instrumentos, y la melodía, el sosiego y la armonía que lo aportan las voces, que en ocasiones suena tan delicada (e innegablemente extraña y por momentos perturbante) que parece que estuviese cantando una mujer. Este balance tan bien definido es lo que hace especial a este grupo, que pueden recordar tanto aSAINT VITUS como en ciertos pasajes a MASTODON. Y todo ello sonando como ellos mismos, ahí es nada.

Excepcional disco, de principio a fin, sin fisuras, sólido, con canciones llenas de sentimiento sin dejar de lado el lado más pesado del doom metal. Combinación muy atractiva imperdible para amantes del género. Lo mejor, disfrutarlo dejándose llevar, sin comparaciones, así lo hice yo en las últimas dos escuchas y es de esta forma como de paladea mejor. Esperemos tan sólo que la mala suerte que hasta el momento han tenido cambie. Discazo

If we consider that BLACK SABBATH were the first that played heavy metal, then we have to admit that doom metal was also one of the first genres of our favorite music. Strange enough, though, there were few bands that have chosen to play doom metal in comparison with other heavy metal genres, but as anyone can say quality doesn’t hide in numbers.

Years after BLACK SABBATH, a band from Sweden under the name CANDLEMASS managed to expand the doom metal sound and give it a dark epic and lyrical feeling. You might ask, why I do this introduction and my answer is that UNSILENCE have been influenced by these 2 bands and in their sophomore release they offer us an album full of lyrical and epic emotion in the vein of the aforementioned bands. This isn’t all, however, because you see these guys come from England and I don’t know if you are aware of it, but lately this country gave us some very interesting doom metal bands like SOLSTICE and OLD SEASON. I can’t explain how these guys manage this over there, but they really have offered us bands that not only do they create great doom metal compositions, but also have created a recognizable sound. UNSILENCE, I think, is just another band that you can put next to SOLSTICE, because although they have their own musical identity, they seem to have a similar point of view of how epic doom metal should sound. “A Fire on the Sea” is an emotional album that offers to the listener plenty of epic and lyrical moments, but also holds a feeling of nostalgia, that personally brought to my mind the good days of MY DYING BRIDE (though these guys have clean vocals only). The elements that make the sound of UNSILENCE unique in my opinion are the haunting melodies that dominate throughout the album along with the heavy riffing and the beautiful voice of James Kilmurray, which is very warm and expressive (probably one of the best voices that I have listened to in this genre). I don’t know how huge a doom metal band can be, but these ones deserve the attention of everyone who loves this kind of music.
